Hi, it’s Tim Kaine.
A new book by journalist Bob Woodward reveals that Donald Trump stayed in touch with Vladimir Putin after leaving office, and that while in office, he secretly sent Putin what were then rare COVID-19 tests for personal use.
This is just one more example in a long list of ways Trump has cozied up to Vladimir Putin — a dictator who is a direct threat to democracy at home and abroad.
In case you forgot, here are a few other examples:
- Earlier this year, Trump said he would encourage Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” when asked if he’d protect other European countries if Putin attacked them.
-
He said Putin has “very strong control” over his country and said that he was a better leader than President Obama.
- During the 2016 election, he infamously said “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you can find Hillary Clinton’s emails…”
Now we’ve learned that Trump’s friendly relationship with Putin has persisted beyond his presidency.
I know Trump wants to be president — but of what country??
Look, I worked for years to pass a bipartisan law preventing any president from withdrawing from NATO, and we were successful. But a Republican-controlled Congress that only answers to Trump could undo the hard work we’ve put in to protect our alliances and national security.
That’s one of the reasons I’m fighting so hard to win re-election — so we have a backstop against a potential Trump presidency that would give Putin the green light to take over Europe.
We need to send a message that we cannot allow a pro-Putin stooge in the White House. Will you help me send that message by donating $20 or more to my campaign today? Your donations help ensure we can hold our Democratic majority!
