John,
Today, we honor the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities. Let us commit to working together to address the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Native Americans. By supporting Indigenous-led initiatives and advocating for their rights, we can create a more just and equitable future for all.
As Democrats, we believe in acknowledging the painful history of colonization and the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous communities. By recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day, we take a meaningful step towards reconciliation, justice, and equity.
Let us use this day not only to celebrate but also to reflect upon the importance of listening to and learning from Indigenous voices, which have profoundly contributed to shaping our country. Learn about how the Iroquois Confederacy's Great Law of Peace served as the framework for the founding principles of the US Constitution.
And from Dr. Rosa Colquitt, DPO State Party Chair, let us never forget the timely words of outgoing President Joseph Biden in his 2023 Proclamation on Indigenous Peoples:
" . . . we are working together with Tribal Nations to end the
scourge of violence against Indigenous women and girls.
These efforts are a matter of dignity, justice, and good faith.
But we have more to do to help lift Tribal communities from
the shadow of our broken promises, to protect their right to vote,
and to help them access other opportunities that their ancestors
were long denied."
Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable Oregon for all.
Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!
