The road to recovery from this Hurricane Season will be long and costly. To help rebuild, I joined Representatives Virginia Foxx, Chuck Edwards, and 11 others in writing a letter urging President Biden, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland to provide as much leniency as possible for federal permitting requirements and regulations when communities begin to rebuild. Waiving certain reviews and timelines will allow our communities to rebuild quicker and keep costs lower. For families across our state, getting them back into a home is more important than bureaucratic red tape.

I also joined Senator Thom Tillis, Representative Richard Hudson, and all North Carolina House Republicans, in advising Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell to repurpose the Greensboro Children’s Center (GCC) as a vital resource for North Carolina’s rescue and recovery efforts. With thousands displaced, many losing their homes and essential supplies, the GCC could serve as a temporary shelter for those affected and a staging area for aid workers actively engaged in recovery efforts throughout the state. HHS originally took over GCC to create an Influx Care Facility (ICF) meant to house and support unaccompanied alien children (UAC) in the case of an emergency. However, in June 2024, it was announced GCC had “ramped down its operations to facility upkeep.” This letter requests that mission be changed and the property handed over to FEMA to be used to support displaced North Carolinians.
