Penn State. After a series of doxing attacks against Jewish students at Penn State University spewed from the ‘Stop Arab Hate’ X account, some of the students have received death threats. According to Penn State’s Hillel, the university is taking steps to protect students and is working with law enforcement. ADL’s Philadelphia office is

providing support to the school’s Hillel as well. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt noted that doxing is a malicious, premeditated attack on the safety and privacy of the students, and “Penn State needs to take decisive action. If the perpetrators were students, the strongest disciplinary actions must be on the table.”

Harvard. Prominently parked in Harvard yard in Cambridge this week is a

timeline of Israel’s ‘history’ as seen by an anti-Israel student group at Harvard University. Described by that group — the Harvard Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee — as an “art installation”, the timeline makes interesting assertions, including that Israel started the 1973 war with neighboring states. They didn’t mention that this war is also referred to as the Yom Kippur war since, in fact, it started with a military invasion of Israel by several armies that took place on Yom Kippur in order to surprise the IDF. As Elliott Abrams, a senior fellow for Middle Eastern studies at the Council on Foreign Relations noted, "It shames
Harvard and makes you wonder what is being taught, and what is being learned, in its classrooms today."

Hillels Under Attack. In a new and sadly unsurprising twist, anti-Israel protesters on campuses across the country are setting their sights on Hillel centers — the central hubs for Jewish student life. Across campuses, the demand is the same: defund, dismantle and, as one protester so eloquently put it,

“Hillel go to hell.” As ADL’s Shira Goodman summed it up: “This is a clear effort to undermine Jewish life on campus.” And it’s not just talk. At schools including UC Santa Cruz and Drexel, student groups have demanded the universities cut ties with Hillel, calling it a “Zionist institution.” These calls are deeply disturbing for Jewish students and faculty. As Hillel President Adam Lehman said, “These are overtly antisemitic campaigns to erase a significant portion of Jewish life on campus.”

FIT. In an unfashionable outburst, demonstrators chanting “We will honor all our martyrs” attempted to ‘occupy’ the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Feldman Center for an anti-Israel protest on Thursday, according to an online

report. The SJP members were eventually cleared from the building in Manhattan. The school had multiple encampments during the last school year. To reduce this kind of disruption, FIT’s administration has fashioned

updated student guidelines “to ensure the safety of the FIT community and protect individuals' health and property, encampments and overnight demonstrations are not permitted in any college location, regardless of space.”

UNC-Chapel Hill. The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

ramped up security last week as Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) hosted a “Week of Resistance.” SJP held a candlelight vigil to “honor martyrs,” gathering just outside the campus landmark “Old Well” after the university fenced off the area. This follows recent protests where demonstrators spray-painted anti-Israel slogans — including “Free Gaza” and “Israel is a terror state” — and

tore down the American flag at the Naval Armory. In response, the university has increased security measures,

requiring student IDs for access to certain buildings and stationing guards across campus.

New Roots for a Rabbi. After 183 years, one of NYC’s largest Catholic education institutions,

Fordham University, has hired their first rabbi. Mazal tov! Rabbi Katja Vehlow is the first Jewish chaplain at Fordham, and is stepping into this role during a turbulent time for students at New York universities, as schools across the city cope with anti-Israel protests and other incidents. She is excited to work on relationship building at the university: “I think there’s been a lot of discomfort for a lot of people, Jewish students, non-Jewish students. I’ve heard of relationships that have frayed.” Vehlow is starting to put roots down. We hope to see her continue to grow and foster the Jewish community, currently around 500 students, on Fordham’s campus.

Transplanting Dollars from Ivies to Israel. "I think their eyes have been opened to the mentality of some of the graduates of these schools and what they've been learning," said venture capitalist and philanthropist

David Magerman. He is referring to employer concerns about what students are learning these days, given the surge in anti-Israel and antisemitic sentiment on campus. Magerman is taking action by halting donations to his alma mater Penn and is instead giving millions of dollars to Israeli universities. His intent is to support programs for English speaking students in the hopes that this will provide a refuge for Jewish students from the United States. He has already announced plans to give a million dollars each to five Israeli educational institutions, with more on the way.

Come Together. Sir Paul McCartney, the perpetually youthful former Beatle, was

seen at a synagogue in Santiago, Chile, wearing a kippah as he and his wife, American Jewish business executive Nancy Shevell, attended Yom Kippur services over the weekend. McCartney, who was in South America as part of his current long and winding tour, has also previously

played in Israel. He decided to let it be there in Tel Aviv in 2008 despite calls to cancel.

Solidarity Heats Up in Miami. In the midst of a High Holiday season weighed down by the memory of Oct. 7, Jewish teens in Miami are responding with defiance and

solidarity with Israel. Sixteen-year-old Jack Brod, a student at Miami Country Day School, has been wearing a yellow pin to honor Israeli hostages, saying it’s his way of showcasing pride in his identity. “Given the events of Oct. 7, I understand just how lucky I am to be Jewish,” he shared. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Julia Jerusalmi performed a dance titled "Before & After" to honor the victims of the Nova Music Festival massacre. In the face of rising antisemitism and uncertainty, these Miami teens are standing tall, using their faith and community to push forward, reminding us of the strength and unity of the Jewish people.
