Dear Friend,
Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! Today, we celebrate the rich cultures, resilience, and wisdom of Indigenous communities here in Maryland and across the world. While we honor the histories and contributions of Indigenous peoples, we also recognize that their fight for justice, sovereignty, and land rights continues to this day.
As an organization, we are keenly aware that the very land we operate on was unjustly taken from its original stewards. That’s why Progressive Maryland proudly joined the Land Back movement as part of our commitment to Indigenous justice. We have taken action by paying a voluntary monthly land tax to the Cedarville Band of Piscataway Indians. This land tax supports their vital work to revitalize Indigenous communities, preserve cultural heritage, and regain control of their ancestral territories.
Our commitment goes beyond acknowledgment. We recognize that the fight for Native sovereignty and self-determination is deeply interconnected with our broader mission of creating a more just and equitable future for all. Indigenous rights are human rights, and they are central to building a world rooted in equality, dignity, and respect for all people.
As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, let us reflect on the strength of Native communities and their continued fight for justice. Let us also recommit ourselves to standing in solidarity with Indigenous movements, not just in words but through tangible actions that support land sovereignty and the protection of Indigenous ways of life.
Today and every day, we stand with Indigenous communities in their ongoing struggle for justice and liberation.
In solidarity and gratitude,
The Progressive Maryland Team
