As with the last presidential election, MCRGO student certifications have nearly doubled over typical numbers in the past several weeks.

Lame Duck Session: Under Age 21 Purchase Prohibition

The Michigan House of Representatives currently has a razor thin 56-54 Democratic majority. The entire Michigan House is up for election this year. The Michigan Senate and Governor are not up for election this year. The fate of gun bills in 2025-2026 depends on which party controls the Michigan House.

Current election forecasts suggest a strong likelihood of Democrats losing control of the Michigan House of Representatives. This is especially true now due to President Trump's recent polling surge in our state. If this happens, we anticipate a series of new gun controls bills to be taken up in the lame duck session before a new Republican majority is seated in January. In the coming weeks, we'll take a look at possible gun control bills for the November-December 2024 lame duck session.

House Bill 4203 was introduced back in March 2023 but has not yet been taken up by committee. The bill would ban the private sale of a pistol or long gun to young adults ages 18-20. It would also prohibit those young adults from possessing a firearm in public except under the direct supervision of an adult 21 years or over. No exemptions are provided in the bill for self defense either in public or in the home. While Kamala Harris claims to own a Glock for home defense, House Bill 4203 would deny the ability to purchase a firearm for those same basic self-defense rights to young adults in Michigan.
