Rep. Miller-Meeks: We Must Reject the Anti-Law Enforcement Stance of the Left

In recent years, our nation has faced unprecedented challenges, not just from external threats but from within. The radical “Defund the Police” movement, spearheaded by radical Democrats and leftists, seeks to undermine the very foundations of law and order that protect our communities. This misguided initiative is not only reckless but also dangerous.

Here in Iowa, we strongly support our law enforcement officers, who bravely uphold the rule of law, often at great personal risk. In Iowa alone, over 5,000 dedicated officers work tirelessly to ensure our safety. They deserve our unwavering support, not the defunding and dismantling advocated by far-left activists.

The consequences of this anti-police rhetoric are clear and alarming. Assaults on law enforcement officers have reached a 10-year high, with the FBI reporting 79,000 attacks last year. This is not just a statistic; it represents the real danger our officers face every day, exacerbated by the hostile environment fostered by those who seek to undermine their authority.

Cities like Minneapolis and Los Angeles have fallen victim to chaotic policies that prioritize social experiments over public safety. The so-called “Autonomous Zones” showcased the devastating impact of defunding efforts, leading to rampant crime, vandalism, and loss of life. The scars from these initiatives remain, with cities like San Francisco and Chicago grappling with a surge in violence and disorder.

Calls to defund the police are an affront to public safety and a recipe for chaos. Stripping police departments of their resources and authority only emboldens criminals. Policies like cashless bail and the dismantling of law enforcement agencies do not create safer communities; they create lawlessness.

Rather than constraining our police, we must empower them. Investing in law enforcement is essential for ensuring public safety and preserving the integrity of our neighborhoods. We need to increase funding for essential resources, support mental health initiatives, and provide our officers with the tools they need to protect us effectively.

As a nation, we must reject the radical agenda that seeks to dismantle our law enforcement. Let’s stand together in support of those who risk everything to keep us safe. Our communities depend on it, and our law enforcement heroes deserve nothing less than our full backing.

Representing Iowa's 1st

Had a productive meeting with key officials from Genesis Medical Center in Davenport. We addressed critical issues in the medical supply chain and the safety of healthcare personnel. It’s crucial that we take action to protect our dedicated healthcare workers.

Great joining health, business and patient advocacy groups for a roundtable to lower obesity rates. I’m proud to cosponsor the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, legislation that will directly address this issue by expanding access to weight loss drugs and treatments.

Honored to be with the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines as we solemnly observed the Oct 7th anniversary.

This week, my staff member in the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs attended the 44th Annual Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs Conference to showcase the important work we do for veterans and their nurses. As Chairwoman, I will keep fighting for better care for our veterans and honoring the dedication of the nurses who serve our nation’s heroes.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks
