Friends,

Today members of the Our People Our Port coalition stood in solidarity with port truck drivers who are calling for protections.

Port drivers are essential workers, yet they lack the essential protections needed to keep themselves and their families safe and healthy during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Because trucking companies misclassify these drivers as "independent contractors," they are left with no safety net and must risk their lives each day to transport the necessities and medical equipment that we all need to survive.

This morning, during the Port of Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners meeting, supporters accompanied drivers who delivered a petition calling for basic protections such as PPE and paid sick days.

TAKE ACTION: Sign our petition RIGHT NOW to the Mayors of Los Angeles and Long Beach calling for them to ensure that port drivers have the protection they need at work and for their families. ([link removed])

The Mayors have an opportunity to ensure that the laws they have passed are being followed at the ports and by trucking companies.

Port trucking companies have long taken advantage of drivers by claiming drivers don’t work directly for trucking companies. This means that these companies don’t pay into unemployment or take any responsibility for healthcare costs.

Now with Covid-19, the companies are refusing to provide paid sick leave and haven’t even bothered to provide masks and gloves. We know that with the Mayors’ guidance, the ports and trucking companies will do the right thing.

Now is the time for action. Stand with port drivers today and sign the petition to the Mayors of Los Angeles and Long Beach NOW. ([link removed])

We have stood shoulder to shoulder with port drivers on the strike lines over the years. We know that it’ll take a continued commitment to stand on the side of justice to make sure that port drivers and other frontline workers get the protections they need and deserve.
In Solidarity,
