John,
As a Common Cause member, you understand that individual states’ voting rules will have a huge—but underrecognized—impact on whose voices are heard in this election.
That’s why we’ve spent years making smart investments at the state level – and right now, we’re seeing real results. Here’s some big wins from just the last few weeks of our work pushing back against election deniers and extremist politicians who are trying to undermine democracy:
-
Common Cause Georgia is taking legal action to stop a blatantly illegal purge of more than 5,000 voters – joining with our voting rights partners to make sure every eligible Georgian can cast their ballot without obstruction.
-
In Nebraska, we stopped a last-minute attempt to rig the Electoral College. Special interests wanted to switch Nebraska back to winner-takes-all to try and gain a partisan advantage. But Common Cause Nebraska mobilized dozens of our members to stop this scheme in its tracks, making sure that every Nebraskan’s voice will be heard in the upcoming election.
-
In Indiana, Common Cause just scored a huge victory for fair maps! For over 40 years, the City of Anderson had refused to redraw its city council districts, even as the population changed significantly. We sued the city and the county election board for violating the Constitution and won – forcing the city to finally draw fair districts and give voters the representation they deserve!
-
And in Michigan, we just took a giant step forward in our push for voting rights. Thanks to months of advocacy from Common Cause members in Michigan and across the country, the Michigan Voting Rights Act passed in the State Senate. Now, we’re focused on clearing the last hurdles in the House to ensure that all Michigan voters have equal access to the ballot box—without fear of discrimination.
John, this is just a fraction of what we can achieve when we work together. At every level—national, state, and local—Common Cause is working across the aisle to stop attacks on our rights and pass pro-democracy laws.
And as we gear up for what many are calling the most important election of our lifetimes, we’re not letting up.
Right now, we're rapidly expanding our Election Protection program and mobilizing members across the country as nonpartisan election volunteers – because, like you, we know our democracy works best when every eligible voter can make their voice heard.
So as our team gears up to combat voter suppression ahead of November's presidential election, I'm grateful we’re doing this side-by-side with you. Because of members like you, John, I’m confident that the best days of our democracy still lie ahead.
Thank you for standing with us in this fight for democracy,
Elena Nunez, Senior Vice President of State Operations
and the team at Common Cause
