John,

The president has done it again. He’s appointed another millionaire to head a government agency. So much for draining that swamp.

Trump has tapped RNC and Trump campaign megadonor Louis Dejoy to serve as Postmaster General.

Dejoy, who reportedly sold his company, New Breed Logistics, for a cool $615 million in 2014, joins a host of millionaires and billionaires appointed to run some of our country’s most critical public service institutions.

This president has waged his own war with the United States Postal Service, a lifeline for many, and a critically important piece of our democracy as we enter a phase of mass voting-by-mail.

Under pressure from Trump, Congress has refused to issue COVID-19 stimulus funding to USPS.

The post office is an essential service -- particularly in our rural communities in Iowa.

COVID-19 shows no signs of slowing down, and Vote By Mail elections in November are a real possibility. Without the USPS, a fair Vote By Mail election is impossible.

The USPS is one of the largest employers in the country, and if it doesn’t get stimulus funds, the nearly 600,000 people it employs may lose their jobs.

The U.S. Postal Service was deliberately put into a difficult financial situation in 2006 when the Republican held Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA), which required the USPS to create a $72 billion fund to pay for the cost of its post-retirement health care costs, 75 years into the future. A burden that applies to no other federal agency or private corporation.

Another fact: did you know the USPS employs more military veterans than any other employer in the US?

Many rural and urban Americans get prescriptions and medical supplies through the mail. The post office, for some, is a connection to the outside world. It offers customers the ability to purchase money orders, obtain passports and more.

The USPS could also offer simple banking services to those who don’t have access to a traditional for-profit bank or non-profit credit union.

I never ever thought I’d be typing this sentence but - we can’t let the USPS die.

Join me in telling Congress to Save the United States Postal Service.
