Re: Updates from the ground

Hi there,

Here with a quick update on some important items I’m tracking from my home state of Michigan.

Holding the Michigan State House
Republicans are trying to take back the State House and end the Democratic trifecta we helped win in 2022. If they do, they could attempt to roll back progress on fair maps by targeting the state’s independent redistricting commission.

There are extreme MAGA candidates on the ballot – like Representative Matt Maddock, who is running for reelection to the 51st district. Not only did Maddock perpetuate the lies about the 2020 election results, he was in DC on January 6th and spoke at a pro-Trump rally the night before.

But we have endorsed some extraordinary House candidates as part of this year’s Democracy Defenders program — and they are ready to hold the line against extreme MAGA Republicans who are doing everything they can to maintain power and bring Project 2025 policies into our communities.

These pro-democracy leaders need your help right now. Can you make a donation to help hold the House here in Michigan and defend democracy across the country? [[link removed]]

Protecting the State Supreme Court
Progressive justices currently hold a 4-3 majority in the Michigan State Supreme Court — and there are two seats up this November.

Unsurprisingly, Republicans have nominated two extreme candidates. One of them, Andrew Fink, perpetuates the “Big Lie” and actually attended a “Stop the Steal” rally at the Michigan State Capitol on January 6, 2021. The other candidate, Patrick William O’Grady, was recently endorsed by Donald Trump and is backed by “Right to Life Michigan,” an anti-abortion organization.

There are two phenomenal Democratic candidates who’ve stepped up to preserve our fundamental rights. We’ve endorsed Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas as Democracy Defenders — two tested, proven legal professionals who are pro-democracy, pro-voting rights, and pro-freedom.

We cannot let Donald Trump’s allies get elected and take control of the Michigan Supreme Court. Can you chip in right now to help elect leaders all across the country who will protect our fundamental freedoms? [[link removed]]

Expanding Access to Voting
Thanks to a 2022 voter-approved ballot initiative, this is the first-ever presidential election in which Michiganders will be able to vote early!

In addition to unlocking nine days of early voting, Governor Whitmer and the Democratic trifecta have been able to expand voting access with legislation that requires absentee ballot tracking with updates via email and text, requires prepaid postage for all absentee ballots, expands the type of ID accepted for voting, adds more secure drop boxes across the state — and more!

These types of protections strengthen voting rights and safeguard democracy — and the Democratic trifecta was absolutely critical to making this happen. Can you make a contribution right now to help protect fair maps and expand access to voting across the country? [[link removed]]

Thanks so much — more soon.

Brianna
