When I was in my early twenties, I decided to be on birth control. My doctor educated me about my options and I chose to have the implant, a long term, reversible contraceptive. It was the right choice for me and I'm glad that I could take care of myself.
With less than 30 days until Election Day, I've been thinking a lot about the line of women that I come from and their ability to make their own health care decisions.
My grandma grew up before
Roe v. Wade and women relied on "back alley abortions." When my mom needed a D+C to complete a miscarriage, she could get the care she needed. Now, thanks to Donald Trump, my ability to get care depends on the state I am in.
While
Donald Trump is "proud" of what he did, I am so angry.
Women have lost their lives and
others have experienced extreme trauma due to Trump's abortion bans. And I'm terrified — I don't want to be next.
I will always fight for our ability to make our own decisions.
Join me and fellow Planned Parenthood Action Fund members on October 18-20 to make sure that all of our neighbors know what is at stake this election.
I worry about not being able to access care if I am the victim of sexual violence. What if one day I choose to have a child and something goes wrong during pregnancy or birth? As a woman of color, I am already
more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. I do not want the doctors caring for me to have their hands tied because they are worried about going to jail.
Thankfully, Kamala Harris understands this worry and fear. As a woman she takes this issue seriously and she is passionate about sexual and reproductive health care. I am so excited to vote for Kamala Harris for president!
But as important as it is to have Harris in the White House, we must have a Congress that will send her legislation to protect and expand our rights.
That's why I'm doing my part to talk to my neighbors by knocking doors and making phone calls to make sure they are voting up and down the ballot for candidates who will protect sexual and reproductive rights.
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund has made it easy to volunteer directly with your local candidates who are champions for reproductive rights.
In fact, you can join Planned Parenthood Action Fund members for an abortion rights Weekend of Action October 18-20 to show the power of people who care about sexual and reproductive health care this election. Will you join us?
I know talking to voters at the doors or on the phone can be really intimidating, but it is easier than you think! Your efforts make a difference. We succeed when we organize and work together.
This election comes down to one choice: Do we want the ability to make our own decisions in our own doctors' offices or do we want the government to make those decisions for us?
For all the women, girls, and people capable of pregnancy that come after us, let's go win this.
