America’s workers are the foundation of all of our economy and essential to all successful businesses. That’s why their compensation, both wages and benefits, must be prioritized by companies.

For the last five decades, the benefits of our economy have consistently flowed to the top 1% while wages for workers have plateaued.

Today, more than 40% of working Americans make less than the median cost of living for a single adult with no children. More than 70% of Americans make less than the median cost of living for a single adult with one child.

It’s clear that the bottom has fallen out of the wage floor, and middle class workers have been left behind by our economic system and institutions. And in recent years, our tax system was rewritten by Donald Trump to benefit the uber-wealthy even more.

That’s why Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA12) has decided to take action: she's introduced the American Stability Act , which would address economic inequity and work towards a tax system that benefits everyday Americans.

This proposed legislation would address our nation’s economic issues in five major ways, by:

Establishing
a
Cost-of-Living
Exemption
for
federal
taxes
equal
to
the
median
cost
of
living
for
a
single
adult
with
no
children
($40,000/per
year).
The
tax
benefit
would
be
phased
out
at
200%
of
the
Cost
of
Living
Exemption.
*
Shifting
the
responsibility
for
the
lost
revenue
onto
taxpayers
making
more
than
$1
million
a
year
by
implementing
a
3%
surtax
on
incomes
over
$1
million,
and
an
additional
5%
surtax
on
annual
earnings
over
$15
million.
*
Formally
replacing
the
federal
‘minimum’
wage
with
a
new
Cost
of
Living
Wage
calculated
as
the
median
cost
of
living
for
a
single
adult
with
no
children
($20/per
hour).
*
Indexing
the
Cost
of
Living
Wage
to
either
annual
inflation
or
to
the
increase
in
the
average
wage
for
all
workers
(whichever
is
higher).
*
Eliminating
most
exceptions
to
wage
law
which
allow
employers
to
pay
some
classes
of
workers
less
than
others
(ex.
disabled
workers
and
“tipped”
workers).

If our economic system remains the same, equality will increase exponentially over time. The rapidly growing global economy and the emergence of new technology around the world virtually guarantees that our nation will be left in the dust if we don’t address this issue now.
