Dear Friend,
At last year's United Nations Climate Convention (COP28), Former Vice President John Kerry led the United States to join nearly 200 nations in committing to an equitable transition away from fossil fuels. Last month, during Climate Week, Kerry slammed our lack of progress.
"We made an agreement in Dubai to transition away from fossil fuels. The problem? We aren't doing that. We're not implementing… Around the world people are falling short or not even trying… and [fossil fuel companies] are just plowing ahead, like it's business as usual."1
As everyone in the path of historic devastation from Hurricanes Helene and Milton knows: Nothing about the climate crisis is business as usual.
Still, we have the opportunity to build a future where everyone has access to affordable and reliable renewable energy, clean air and water, and a stable climate. And yet, our Congress is considering passing a dirty deal that would lock us into decades of dirty fossil fuel infrastructure. Will you speak up to urge your senators and representatives to vote NO on this dangerous fossil fuel giveaway if it comes to a vote?
This legislation would cause irreparable damage to our communities and climate by:
-
Opening up federal lands and waters to further oil and gas leasing.
-
Fast-tracking or even eliminating review of proposed fracked gas export projects, known as LNG, that harm communities and perpetuate the climate crisis.
-
Risking deadly consequences. The LNG export industry is already predicted to cause up to 4,470 avoidable deaths and $62.2B in health costs by 2050.
-
Locking in new greenhouse gas emissions estimated to be equivalent to the annual emissions from 154 coal-fired power plants.2
The United States is already the world's largest exporter of fracked gas. Due to the unchecked burning of fossil fuels, communities nationwide are experiencing catastrophic climate and health impacts. More handouts to this polluting industry are not the answer for our families or future.
Act to stop this dangerous legislation today! |
