T
he general election is fast approaching! These past three weekends, we’ve been emphasizing Shaun’s socialist policy platform: Shaun’s commitment to fighting budget cuts and fully funding our public schools by taxing the ultra-rich and big business, resonated powerfully with voters across the spectrum. Recently the Seattle School Board announced its intention on closing up to 21 Elementary schools - the biggest closure of schools in the country! - laying off educators, and potentially going after educators wages to make up the $100 million deficit. We can’t wait to hit the doors again this week to send a working class champion to Olympia this November!

The Seattle Times has endorsed his right-wing, pro-corporate Democratic Party opponent Andrea Suarez. We’re going to have to fight back as pro-corporate and pro-developer forces align behind Andrea Suarez.

Who is Shaun Scott? Read more about him here.

Social/Hangout with Socialists

This Sunday, 10/13 at 4pm

@Kate’s Pub (309 NE 45th St)

Working to create socialism is sometimes … well, a lot of work! If it’s all rallies and meetings and spreadsheets, it can turn into a drag real quick. We think it’s important to have some time to just simply get to know each other, connect over food and drinks, and have fun together — that’s what this social is for! No big speeches, no business, just time to connect with other leftists.

What to expect:

  • There will be folks to greet you when you arrive and all the DSA tables will be clearly marked
  • We will set aside a few tables for designated activities (board games / political discussion / etc.)
  • Not a member? Not a problem! We’ll have several folks on hand who love talking to new folks! Whether you are a long-time member or just curious about Seattle DSA, this event is for you!
  • t’s fine to arrive late — we’ll be around till at least 7:00pm.

Also, feel free to bring a friend. See you there!

The Seattle IAM Hall is hosting a rally this coming Tuesday at noon, and SDSA members are planning a night shift picket support action from midnight to 4am on Saturday, October 19!

Boeing announces 17,000 layoffs!

The Machinists fight on & SDSA stands with them!

It is now Week 5 of the strike as members of IAM 751 fight for a better contract that ensures a living wage, the return of their pensions, better healthcare and safer working conditions. While Boeing has paid $817 million over the past decade to executives and $68 billion to shareholders, machinists continue to struggle with rising costs of living. Members of Seattle DSA have been there alongside them every step of the way and will continue to be. An injury to one is an injury to all!

This week brought more significant developments. After Boeing took the retaliatory step of canceling striking machinists’ health insurance, the company has now rescinded its contract offer and announced 17,000 layoffs across the company! These actions constitute a draconian attack on the workers and their bid for a strong contract. The bosses believe they can win this fight, so workers need to rally behind the IAM 751 machinists now more than ever!

Seattle DSA’s Labor Working Group helped deliver another round of fresh produce donated from local farmers to IAM 751. The weekly donations will run through the first frost to ensure striking machinists and their families are well fed while the strike continues. Acts of solidarity like this highlight the community’s support for the Boeing machinists. Healthy food makes for healthy picket lines!

SDSA members can continue to show their solidarity by volunteering to help IAM 751 machinists whenever they can or make a donation to the workers strike solidarity fund . Night owl picketers are still needed for the evening (8pm-12am) and late night (12am-4am) shifts, and we strongly encourage volunteers to attend in groups of at least two or more.

If you are driving to the pickets, park at the IAM Hall at 9125 15th Place South and catch a shuttle to the picket lines. The entrance is between the two buildings. Shuttles run regularly and there’s no parking along the lines. If you are taking public transit, you can get off directly at the picket line at 14th & East Marginal Way.

Sign up for more information about future picketing at https://actionnetwork.org/forms/strike-ready-for-the-machinists and donate to the strike hardship fund at https://www.iam751.org/Strike2024/index.htm

Seattle DSA’s Labor Working Group hosted its second Socialist Job Fair of the year and it was a hit! Organizers from several unions participated ranging from unionized to non-unionized workplaces, manufacturing to services, private as well as public sectors. Almost 70 prospective union organizers attended, some of whom only learned about the event walking down the sidewalk and hearing the lively commotion going on inside!

SDSA-sponsored events like this help to plug aspiring organizers into workplace campaigns, gain experience relating socialism to working people’s daily life, and building relationships with our local unions. They also connect workers’ struggles to broader political struggles happening across the world. The fight for a better wage and working conditions is inseparable from all workers’ right to democratically decide on matters that affect them: from workplace issues to national politics, funding for local schools and housing to foreign policy. Workers organizing and taking action in the class struggle  is democratic socialism in practice.

Unable to make it to this recent socialist job fair? No worries! We will be hosting another one this Spring, so be on the lookout for future announcements in the next few months. Better yet, come by the Labor Working Group fall retreat on Sunday, October 20 to meet other socialists and help plan for the coming year including our next job fair! Location is TBD but if you RSVP we will follow up with you on the details!
