We’re barraged by dystopian stories about technology’s
impact on our lives and our futures, from tracking-based
surveillance capitalism to the dominance of a few large
platforms choking innovation. The landscape can feel bleak.
That's why on our podcast, we try to envision a better future.
And speaking of voting—this year’s election is just weeks away.
Concerns about disinformation and conspiracy theories are
on the rise, so we've decided to rerelease our March, 2023
discussion with Alice Marwick, the director of research at
Data & Society. We talk about why seemingly ludicrous
conspiracy theories get so many followers, and when
fact-checking does and doesn’t work. And we come away
with some ideas for how to identify and leverage people’s
commonalities to stem disinformation, while making sure
that the most marginalized and vulnerable internet users
are still empowered to speak out.
Take a listen here.
