Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to come together as a community to raise awareness and encourage early detection. We know that breast cancer awareness is important nationally and here in DC – it is the number one most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the District. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women will get invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.

Next Friday, on October 18, the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Policy and Initiatives and partnering organizations invite you to join us at Breast Care for Washington (4 Atlantic Street SW) for free mammogram screenings, wellness resources, and more. The event and screenings will take place on Wear Pink Day between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. During that time, the Art to Go-Go shuttle will provide free transportation from eight sites in Southeast to the event.

Pink Power

For ongoing, year-round support, the Project WISH [ [link removed] ] program continues to provide free breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured women. If you or someone you know is eligible, contact Project WISH at (202) 442-5900 or [email protected] for more information.

And if you don’t need a mammogram, maybe you need an annual well-woman visit, or a physical, or a colonoscopy. Let’s spread the word to people in our circles to make their appointments and get checked!

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
