Dr. Phil on Texas Values

I traveled to Denton County Thursday night to speak at Senator Tan Parker’s event. Over 700 people turned out to hear our special guest, Dr. Phil. He recently moved his entire production studios to the Denton area and started a news network, Merit Street Media. He’s a graduate of the University of North Texas in Denton. Dr. Phil and I have appeared on several TV shows together over the past few months and have become friends. He’s a good man who shares our Texas values.

Speaking at the Kickoff Event for the Dallas Police Academy Law Enforcement Training Center

I was also in Dallas Thursday to join a celebration marking the kickoff of the Dallas Police Academy’s new Regional Law Enforcement Training Center. This state-of-the-art facility will train law enforcement officers to tackle the many daunting challenges they face daily. I thank Mayor Johnson and Senators West, King, and Parker for helping make this happen.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson switched parties from Democrat to Republican last year. He still has three years remaining in his term.

The state has contributed $20 million, and Dallas voters approved $50 million. The Dallas business community and private citizens are raising the remaining millions to complete the project. It’s a great example of collaboration between state and local government, and the private sector.

As Lt. Governor, supporting law enforcement will always be a top priority. I provided funding for bulletproof vests that can repel rifle rounds after several officers were shot through standard vests. I also funded bullet-resistant windshields for state trooper vehicles after several troopers were shot through their windshields, and I provided bullet-resistant shields for schools after reports revealed a shortage on campuses. Additionally, I created a scholarship program to help students pursue careers in law enforcement. Last session, I secured $350 million to raise pay for sheriffs and their deputies in small rural counties that lack the budget to do so.

I look forward to continuing to fight for our brave peace officers during the upcoming legislative session in 2025.

PUC Hearing

On Saturday, I testified before the Public Utility Commission (PUC) about CenterPoint's failings during Hurricane Beryl this summer in Houston and the surrounding counties. You may not live in this area, but the principles of protecting Texas ratepayers—ensuring reliable service and the lowest possible rates—are the same for every utility company across the state. Riding Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 from Downtown Houston to Old Town Spring

On Monday, I had the opportunity to ride Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 from downtown Houston to Old Town Spring. The eight-week "Heartland of America Tour" concludes in late October. Forty-five 'Big Boy' engines were built in the late 1930s and 1940s. This is the only surviving operational engine of the original 45. It weighs 1.2 million pounds, with each wheel weighing 20,000 pounds. The engine was built to pull long trains to ease congestion caused by multiple smaller trains. In fact, it could pull trains up to an astounding five miles long.

It now tours the nation, drawing out train enthusiasts like me at every stop. Over 45,000 people came out to see it last weekend in Houston. I hopped off to take a video of it pulling into Old Spring, Texas, north of Houston, and as you can see, a big crowd was waiting for it to arrive.
