John,
As we enter the final weeks of election season and anticipate potential changes in Minnesota’s top leadership, we want to express our gratitude to Governor Walz for his support of our movement and to Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan for being such a strong advocate for Ranked Choice Voting—a commitment she will continue to carry into the future.
On Tuesday, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan joined former Senate chief author and congressional candidate Kelly Morrison for a discussion on the upcoming election and the future of RCV in Minnesota. We are deeply grateful for their leadership and dedication to fostering a strong, inclusive, and thriving democracy. Their commitment to advancing our movement—whether in the LG’s office, the governorship, or Congress—gives us hope for the future of RCV.
No matter who serves as governor on January 1, 2025, we know we’ll have a partner eager to work with the new Minnesota Legislature to pass the RCV local options bill and expand this important pro-democracy reform across the state. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped move this vision forward! If you’ve not had the chance to donate to help us finish this election season strong, please consider a contribution now [[link removed]] .

Democracy knocks for a pro-RCV legislature
To pass RCV in 2025, we must elect a pro-RCV majority in the legislature! That’s why we are thrilled to announce the launch of our 2024 Democracy Knocks campaign. Led by RCV House Chief Author, Representative Cedrick Frazier, these efforts are focused on key districts that will determine the balance of power in the next legislative session.
So far, we’ve knocked on thousands of doors, but we need to knock on thousands more in the weeks ahead. Join us for a Democracy Knock or another doorknock near you! If you’re unable to knock doors, we also have phone banks available. Just email us, and we’ll get you started.

Vote No on Repeal campaign continue in Bloomington
The campaign to save RCV in Bloomington is in full swing! Anti-democracy activists are doing their best to roll back democracy reforms across the country, and we have the chance to stop them in their tracks right here at home.
There are two major voter contact events coming up in Bloomington. The first is the Donuts and Doors event tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am. Senator Alice Mann will join democracy activists for coffee, donuts, and conversations with neighbors on why RCV is good for Bloomington.
The second event is a Day of Action on Sunday, October 20, with congressional candidate Kelly Morrison, Senator Melissa Wicklund, and State House candidate Julie Greene. Volunteers will meet at 11am for refreshments and a pump-up before heading out for a big day of knocking on doors!

RCV across the country
Bloomington isn’t the only place where the future of RCV is on the line. Both pro-RCV and anti-RCV measures will be decided at the ballot box across the country this year.
Four states—Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, and Oregon—along with the District of Columbia and Richmond, CA, will vote on whether to adopt RCV. Meanwhile, Alaska is battling a Heritage Foundation-aligned repeal effort, just like Bloomington. Missouri voters will also face a measure to ban RCV entirely, joining 10 other GOP-controlled states that have already banned RCV legislatively.
Additionally, voters in Arizona and Montana will consider measures that could eventually pave the way for RCV adoption.
While these jurisdictions decide the future of RCV, Portland, OR, is preparing for its first proportional RCV election on November 5, joining more than 50 other cities across the nation that have already adopted the reform.

This should be the last presidential election without RCV
All the momentum for Ranked Choice Voting is building at a time when the 2024 presidential election is once again underscoring the urgent need for it. Just as we saw in 2016 (and before that in 2000), third-party candidates are set to split the vote in battleground states, potentially delivering an Electoral College victory to a candidate who doesn’t win the national popular vote.
The spoiler effect is a damaging reality in our current political system, and the only effective way to address it is through RCV. While we can’t amend the Constitution anytime soon to eliminate the Electoral College, we can implement RCV across Minnesota and the nation to prevent vote-splitting, give voters more choice, and ensure that winners—from the presidential race on down—have the support of a true majority.
That’s why all the efforts to adopt and defend RCV across the country this year are so crucial. We are on the front lines of a reform that could solve some of the most pressing issues in our political system. Let’s embrace this responsibility and continue pushing forward to defend and expand RCV right here in Minnesota!
