John,
National Coming Out Day is a powerful reminder of the courage and resilience it takes for LGBTQ+ individuals to live openly and authentically.
For me, it’s deeply personal.
When I turned 18, I registered as a Republican, shaped by the beliefs I had grown up with being raised by fundamentalist Christian parents.
I was also living in fear, hiding who I truly was.
It took years for me to find my courage, embrace my identity, and accept myself as a proud gay man and an unapologetic progressive.
Coming out wasn’t just about my sexuality; it was about finding my voice. It was about unlearning years of fear and limitations and embracing the truth of who I am.
It’s a journey that many in our community know all too well – seeking acceptance and belonging in a world that doesn’t always welcome us.
This fight isn’t just my fight; it’s our fight.
And on National Coming Out Day, we honor every LGBTQIA+ person. Wherever you are on your journey, even if you’re not ready to be out to the world, today is for all of us.
In that spirit, I’m asking for your support. By contributing today, you help amplify our fight for justice and equality in Washington. Together, we can push back against forces that seek to roll back our hard-won rights.
Los Angeles has a proud history of LGBTQ+ advocacy, from the early activism of the Mattachine Society to the first-ever Pride parade in 1970, and the battles against the Briggs Initiative and Proposition 8.
Our city has always led the charge for equality, and I want to continue that legacy as your next congressman.
These aren’t just campaign slogans for me.
Coming out was one of the hardest things I ever did. Telling my conservative parents in 2018 nearly tore our family apart.
But I am proud of who I am, and proud to love my partner. It’s tough enough to seek acceptance from family, let alone society.
That’s why we need leaders who understand this struggle firsthand and are committed to ensuring that everyone can live freely without fear.
It’s wrong that Jimmy Gomez and his special interests are trying to weaponize my story against me through deceitful mailers.
This isn’t just an attack on me; it’s a homophobic attack on all of us who have fought to live our truth.
If these are the morals he displays on the campaign trail—using personal stories as political weapons – then what can we expect when he’s called upon to defend the LGBTQ+ community and our rights in Washington?
We deserve leadership that stands for honesty, integrity, and true allyship.
Let’s turn the page on this kind of politics and choose a representative who shows up for us, always.
Because the stakes are too high.
If Trump returns to the White House, his agenda, including Project 2025, will pose direct threats to LGBTQ+ rights.
We must have strong voices in Congress willing to fight back, and that’s exactly what I plan to do.
We have the power to build a future where everyone’s story matters, where every voice is heard, and where equality is not just a dream but a reality.
Today, as we celebrate National Coming Out Day, I’m asking you to contribute and help us continue the fight.
Let’s honor the courage it takes to be true to ourselves – in public and in private. And let’s work toward a future where every person has the freedom to live authentically.
It’s time for us,
David Kim
