In the midst of wildfires in the Arctic, glaciers melting in Greenland, and record-busting heat in Europe, we push on, supporting actions that will turn our climate crisis around. Impassioned, committed people acting in solidarity can work wonders, and there are plenty of opportunities to do just that in the coming weeks and months—from a global climate strike in September to a National Grid rate case hearing. Take a look below and see where you might be able to help out. For more information or to get connected in some specific way, you can always email [email protected].

National Grid Rate Case Hearing + Commenting

Public Hearing:
Wednesday, August 21 at 2pm (Information session: 1pm)
St. George Library Center (Staten Island, near ferry terminal)
5 Central Avenue

Written comment deadline: Aug 26

Come out to this important hearing to help us say no to National Grid's proposed rate hike, which would raise your gas bills by 12% to fund fossil fuel infrastructure, among other things. National Grid is proposing the increase as it continues to hold New Yorkers hostage by refusing new gas service with an eye to getting the Williams pipeline approved. Let's show up in full force to demand that the Public Service Commission reject National Grid's proposal to charge ratepayers for climate destruction.

Can't make the hearing? You can also submit comments in writing until August 26.

Send your comments opposing National Grid's proposed rate hike!

350BK Families: Tell New York State DNC Chair Jay Jacobs to Support a Climate Debate!

From Aug. 22–24, the Democratic National Committee will vote on whether or not to hold a climate debate. Many of New York’s voting members will be looking to Jay Jacobs, the state committee chairman, for cues on how to vote, so we need to keep the pressure on Jacobs to ensure that he takes the right position.

Jacobs spends much of his time at summer camps that he owns and operates, so we're joining with Sunrise Kids NYC to write to him at camp. Please write Jacobs a letter in support of a climate debate—ideally bundled with a child's drawing of what s/he loves about the natural world—and send it to:

Jay Jacobs

It's great that CNN has decided to host a presidential-candidate town hall devoted to the climate emergency. But is that enough? Join activists both outside and inside the venue to pressure the media and candidates to give the climate crisis the attention it deserves. Stay tuned for more details!

Monthly Meeting: New York City Council Environmental Attorney Samara Swanston

Thursday, September 12 at 7:30pm
Brooklyn Commons
588 Atlantic Avenue (Boerum Hill)

Samara Swanston has been engaged in environmental law for more than twenty-five years, and was an important force behind much of the landmark environmental legislation the City Council passed this year. She litigated the largest environmental lawsuit in state history, and has drafted additional important environmental conservation and environmental justice law. This will be a rare opportunity to meet Samara, get a better understanding of the inner workings of the City Council, learn how we can monitor the implementation of the recent Climate Mobilization Act, and much more.

We’ll also do some organizing and present updates. Come early to hang out with your fellow climate activists, meet with your campaign group, or have a beer or a bite to eat.
