John, do you know about GOTV?

No, it’s not a television channel, though it’s understandable to think so. It stands for Get Out The Vote.

In the early months of a campaign, much of the effort goes into identifying as many supporters as possible in the voter database to contact again when it’s time to vote.

Some supporters volunteer to help identify more supporters, and what began as a handful of staffers making calls to voters in the early stages of a campaign evolves into phone banks and door-to-door canvasses with hundreds of volunteers having conversations with voters — the most valuable kind of voter contact we can do.

It all builds up to GOTV — the period when voting gets underway. That’s right now.

Campaigns call back their supporters or go knock on their door to ask them if they have a plan to vote. Do they need a ride to their polling place? Do they need help finding where to request an absentee ballot?

That effort is underway right now, with millions of votes already cast. I’m about to travel to Texas, Arizona, and Nevada this week to help boost volunteers for their GOTV operations to win the White House and Senate. Can you pitch in $10 to help us GOTV in these critical states?
