Dear John,
As the impacts of climate change ravage communities worldwide, Multnomah County and Oregon gas customers are keeping the pressure on companies that are wreaking this havoc.
MULTNOMAH COUNTY SUES NW NATURAL
On Monday, in a historical move, Multnomah County added NW Natural ([link removed]) to its already groundbreaking climate accountability lawsuit. The lawsuit was originally filed ([link removed]) in 2023 on the anniversary of the 2021 Pacific Northwest Heat Dome – a climate change-fueled event that killed 69 residents in the county. It claims that major fossil fuel companies deliberately misinformed the public and regulators about the causes and expected impacts of climate change.

NW NATURAL CUSTOMERS SUE NW NATURAL
While we were preparing this email, another lawsuit was filed against NW Natural ([link removed]) – by its own customers. The suit argues that customers seeking to make “green” choices were misled by NW Natural, and claims that rather than reduce emissions, the “renewable natural gas” programs are actually leading to growth in methane pollution. Plaintiffs also allege that the utility was double counting “emissions reductions,” telling customers that their money was being spent to reduce emissions, while simultaneously claiming the investments as part of their state mandated decarbonization program.
As we saw this week, the climate crisis is accelerating at a devastating rate and fossil fuel companies like NW Natural are unequivocally to blame. We must do everything in our power to hold them accountable. These lawsuits are important steps in the right direction.
