Happy National Coming Out Day, John!

As the first openly gay, Black member of Congress, this day is deeply personal to me. I can't express how much the world we live in today feels so different from the world I lived in growing up closeted.

As scary as it was at first, coming out was one of the best decisions I ever made. I'm proud of all the LGBTQ+ people living their truth and want anyone who may still be on their journey to know: there's a community ready to support you.

Today is a reminder that there's so much for us to celebrate—and keep fighting for. Because there's a world out there where no one has to question whether it is safe to show up as they are. A world where a kid like me growing up poor, Black, and gay can have the confidence to achieve anything he or she or they put their mind to—even becoming a member of Congress.

While we have made significant strides in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality, we still have a long way to go. The progress we've earned is being undone by far-right politicians, and the challenges we face today underscore the importance of standing together.

It's never been more clear that we need leaders in Congress who understand the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community and who will always stand in support of equality for everyone.
