** Hello Friend,
------------------------------------------------------------
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), and Peace Over Violence is joining communities nationwide to shine a light on the staggering prevalence of domestic violence. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S.—that’s over 10 million per year. This month, we are highlighting the urgency to stand with and provide critical support to survivors.
October also highlights National Bullying Prevention Month and National LGBTQ+ History Month. Bullying can be prevented by addressing the factors that put young people at risk—learn more here ([link removed]) . LGBTQ+ History Month is an occasion to celebrate the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community, who face disproportionately higher rates of intimate partner violence—44% of lesbian women, 61% of bisexual women, and 26% of gay men experience IPV in their lifetime, underscoring the need for prevention and healing efforts tailored to the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ survivors.
Read on to learn how to join us in raising awareness and supporting survivors this month and all year long. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build safer, more inclusive communities for all.

** Domestic Violence Action Fund
------------------------------------------------------------
The Domestic Violence Action Fund is a multi-year campaign initiated by Peace Over Violence to make the connections between domestic violence and the most urgent health, social and economic problems impacting our communities today. DVAF seeks to inspire and activate all of us to imagine life without domestic violence.
Our goal is to end domestic violence in our communities. We believe that violence begins in the home and extends into society at large, contributing to violence everywhere.

** Thrive Causemetics: The Yvette
------------------------------------------------------------
In January of this year, Peace Over Violence was invited to host an Empowerment Self Defense training for our partners at Thrive Causemetics at their Los Angeles Headquarters. Yvette Lozano, POV’s Chief Programs and Operations Officer, along with two other members of our team, led an awesome session filled with tips, strategies, and physical techniques to educate and engage the group.
For every product purchased, Thrive donates to help communities thrive ([link removed]) . Domestic violence is one of their areas of giving, and POV has been a giving partner for the last few years. Each product is named after a strong, empowered woman, and they decided to name one of their newest products after Yvette! Introducing the limited-edition Dream & Glow Chaser Blush & Highlighter Duo Palette in the shades Ayesha & Yvette. We were able to surprise Yvette with this honor and celebrate her along with her duo partner and friend of POV, Ayesha Perry-Iqbal, at an event in Hollywood hosted by Thrive. Check out the video we played from Thrive Founder and CEO, Karissa, when we surprised Yvette ([link removed]) . Congratulations, Yvette, and thank you for being an inspiration!
100% of the proceeds from this product in the month of October will be donated in support of Domestic Violence Awareness. ([link removed])

** Congrats new volunteers!
------------------------------------------------------------
Peace Over Violence has concluded our Fall 2024 Counselor Advocate Training; congratulations to all who completed the extensive 82-hour training! We had a total of 8 Volunteers and 6 Interns who committed to immersing themselves in learning various topics related to intimate partner violence and connecting with community resources such as district attorneys, sexual assault nurse examiners, and case managers. Each counselor advocate also participated in role-play scenarios, which provided them with hands-on training for real hotline and accompaniment experiences to prepare for the meaningful work they are about to embark on.
This training was held simultaneously with our Violence Prevention Specialist (VPS) training. VPS represent POV and provide education about gender-based violence and strategies for prevention to youth, community groups, and professionals. VPS are experts who excel at community speaking, outreach tabling events, and workshop/training facilitation. Also included in this training was a mini Voices Over Violence introduction for volunteers who are survivors interested in sharing their stories publicly.
Without our volunteers, we would be unable to meet the needs for the 24/7 Los Angeles Rape and Battery Hotline and SART Accompaniments and our community requests. Our advocates and volunteers provide support to survivors and become beacons of hope in our community. If you are interested in supporting survivors and donating your time, please consider one of our many volunteer opportunities. We are currently recruiting for our Spring 2025 Counselor Advocate training. For more information, click here ([link removed]) .

** No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
by Rachel Louise Snyder
We call it domestic violence. We call it private violence. Sometimes we call it intimate terrorism. But whatever we call it, we generally do not believe it has anything to do with us. In America, domestic violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime… we have not taken the true measure of this problem
** Wage Peace ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
— A poem by Judyth Hill
Wage peace with your breath.
Breathe in firemen and rubble,
breathe out whole buildings and flocks of red wing blackbirds.
Breathe in terrorists
and breathe out sleeping children and freshly mown fields.
Breathe in confusion and breathe out maple trees.
Breathe in the fallen and breathe out lifelong friendships intact.
Wage peace with your listening: hearing sirens, pray loud.
Remember your tools: flower seeds, clothespins, clean rivers.
Make soup.
Play music, memorize the words for thank you in three languages.
Learn to knit, and make a hat.
Think of chaos as dancing raspberries,
imagine grief
as the outbreath of beauty
or the gesture of fish
Swim for the other side.
Wage peace.
Never has the world seemed so fresh and precious:
Have a cup of tea …and rejoice.
Act as if armistice has already arrived.
Celebrate today.
