Team, you’ve already heard from me about the importance of calling on President Biden to establish Chuckwalla National Monument. Doing so would protect 620,00 acres of land rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage just south of the iconic Joshua Tree National Park.
Right now, the nearby community of Palm Springs is getting ready to celebrate Pride -- which is a perfect reminder of what these lands mean to the LGBTQ+ community. Folks come from all over the country (and world!) to celebrate our beautiful public lands and experience being their authentic selves in nature.
As we establish more public lands, it’s essential that we work to expand access to nature for everyone -- especially marginalized communities such as LGBTQ+ folks.
That’s why we’re asking President Biden to support the LGBTQ+ community and designate Chuckwalla National Monument! Will you join us?

Protecting these lands will help our environment and increase access to outdoor space for people across Palm Springs and eastern Coachella Valley, where there is already a thriving LGBTQ+ population in the desert.
Local Councilmember Gary Gardner of the Desert Hot Springs put it best when he said: “We're here, we're queer, and, we are outside appreciating all this fabulous desert has to offer. We urge President Biden to use his powers under the Antiquities Act to designate these lands as the Chuckwalla National Monument, so everyone, gay and straight, can continue to appreciate its beauty and history.”
In addition, this designation aligns with Biden’s expressed commitment to honoring the sovereignty of Tribal Nations. Chuckwalla National Monument could provide an opportunity for willing Tribes to steward their homelands.
The more land we preserve, the easier it is for marginalized communities to take part in celebrating and enjoying our beautiful outdoor spaces. That’s why we need everyone to speak up and call on President Biden to establish this designation today.
Help us advocate for the designation of Chuckwalla National Monument so we can continue expanding our public lands and protect the thriving natural life in California for everyone!
