Can you believe it’s October already? We’re in the midst of Balloon Fiesta season, the holidays are right around the corner, and we’ve been working hard for everyone in NM-01. Here’s a recap of what our September looked like: Stopping the Flow of Fentanyl into Our Communities | In New Mexico, we know all too well the consequences of addiction for our families and communities. That’s why I introduced the Stop Opioid Pill Press and Fentanyl Act, or STOPP Act, for short. This bill would require those who manufacture or distribute pill pressers and parts to “serialize” their machinery, keep records of all of the transactions, and report those transactions to the Attorney General. This would help ensure we track and stop the flow of illicit drugs into the country. I won’t stop until this crisis ends. Watch my remarks from the press conference here. Welcomed Leader Jeffries to New Mexico | Last week, I had the absolute honor of hosting Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries for a Community Conversation in the heart of NM-01! We spoke to the community about issues that you told us were priorities: reproductive rights, lowering costs, election integrity, and so much more. One thing is clear across the board: Democrats deliver! Thank you to everyone who showed up and welcomed Leader Jeffries! I hope to have more community conversations in the future. But time and time again, they have been forced from their homes and the land that holds sacred meaning to them. For the people of San Felipe Pueblo, the area currently referred to as the “Ball Ranch” holds cultural and religious significance. I introduced the San Felipe Pueblo Land into Trust bill, which would direct the Secretary of the Interior to convey the area known as the Ball Ranch Area of Critical Environmental Concern into trust for the benefit of San Felipe Pueblo. Indigenous peoples deserve to keep and protect the land they’ve lived on for thousands of years free from desecration and destruction. Watch my remarks from the press conference here. Demanding Speaker Johnson Put RECA on the House Floor | It has been exactly four months since Speaker Mike Johnson refused to put the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act on the House Floor to reauthorize it. So not only has the existing RECA program lapsed, but RECA hasn’t been expanded to include Tularosa Downwinders and others who were left out of the first bill. The bill passed the Senate, and we have the votes to pass it in the House. Speaker Johnson is denying Americans the compensation they so rightfully deserve, and history is watching. I won't stop fighting until our downwinders are recognized and compensated. Watch my remarks from a RECA press conference here. Protecting Workers from Wage Theft | Workers across all industries in our country—from construction sites to auto manufacturing to painters and plumbers in our homes, to food and commercial workers in hotels and restaurants—deserve to keep every single cent they earn. These workers help to keep our country running. That’s why I co-sponsored the Don’t STEAL Act, which would make wage theft a felony nationwide. This bill protects ALL workers’ hard-earned income. The time is now that we protect workers from being cheated out of their paychecks. Celebrating a $156 Million Dollar Investment in Our Community | A few weeks ago, I attended an event with the EPA to announce $156 million in funding thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund that will connect New Mexicans with funds to bring more solar power to their homes! This is integral in helping to cut home energy bills and provide families with resilient and secure power. This shows the investment the Biden-Harris administration has made to create a climate-resilient future for generations to come. It’s the honor of my life to represent you in Congress.
