Fall
Fall Tree Color

What makes for a colorful fall display courtesy of our shade trees? There is often a lot of emphasis put on weather; however, overall weather has less to do with the changing of the leaves than you may think. The main factor in the changing of leaves is shorter periods of sunlight. During the spring and summer, leaves get their green color from chlorophyll, through the process of photosynthesis. With the approach of fall, shorter periods of daylight trigger a dormancy response in trees, and they stop making chlorophyll. As the green color diminishes, the other colors in the leaves remain.

Weather, however, can affect how brightly leaves may turn and how long they may display their fall color. The best fall leaf displays are influenced by late summer and early autumn weather. Typically, sunny days and cool fall nights create the brightest fall color. Warm, wet and overcast late summers and autumns can reduce the vibrancy of leaves due to reduced sugar production.
