Today, on National Coming Out Day, I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to live openly as an LGBTQ+ person. This day is about celebrating authenticity — whether that means celebrating loud and proud with your community or finding the strength to be true to yourself in private.
Growing up, I never imagined that someone like me — someone who faced fear and uncertainty over how their community would see them — could hold public office.
Being the first openly LGBTQ+ person and the first woman to represent Vermont in Congress has been a deeply personal journey. And it’s our community in Vermont that has been one of my greatest sources of strength.
But I also know that not everyone can come out. Safety, acceptance, and personal circumstances mean that staying private is the best or only option for many.
Today isn’t just about who steps out in their truth — it’s also about standing with those who can’t or were never able to.
LGBTQ+ rights are in question across the country. It’s all the more essential that we uplift our community. We’re fighting not only for visibility, but also for the right to live freely and safely, whether you’re out or not – and that is one of my top priorities in Congress!
This National Coming Out Day, let’s celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ+ experience in all of its beautiful forms. Let’s uplift those who are out and proud, and hold a seat at the table for those who aren’t. And together, let’s continue to fight for a world where everyone can live authentically — without fear.
