GOP Senate candidate Larry Hogan approved millions of taxpayer dollars for his firm's clients when he was governor
Another day, another pay-for-play GOP scandal. This time, it's former governor Hogan of Maryland who was busted having handed out contracts worth millions of taxpayer dollars to the clients of his real estate firm. Ostensibly, the HOGAN firm was in a trust and run by his brother, but that didn't stop Larry from handing out nearly 40% of the competitive affordable housing awards overseen by the governor to developers listed as clients on HOGAN’s website, a group of just six developers who competed against 60 other firms. On top of that, the governor personally voted on grants or loans to several of the same HOGAN-listed developers from his seat on the three-member Board of Public Works. “It’s wrong on its face,” says Danielle Brian, executive director of the Project on Government Oversight. “There is a law that appears to prevent this from happening.” Nothing goes hand in hand quite like "Republican" and "some of the most outrageously flagrant corruption you've ever seen."

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Furious North Carolinian eviscerates Trump on air
In a shocking and heartbreaking call-in to Morning Joe, a North Carolinian man laments how his father-in-law has been utterly poisoned by Trump's lies about FEMA — and is refusing all government efforts to help him after he lost everything in Hurricane Helene.

GOP wages all-out attack on reading and our libraries
All across the country, Republican extremists are on the warpath against our libraries and against reading, purging bookshelves of books about Black history or books that dare to acknowledge that LGBTQ people exist. Their crusade has resulted in efforts to shut down libraries entirely and threats of physical violence, lawsuits and criminal charges against librarians. We can’t stand by and allow them to get away with policing what our children read. Will you add your name to pledge your support for American libraries and our kids’ right to read?
Florida devastated by flooding, fierce winds and tornadoes from deadly Hurricane Milton
Hurricane Milton wreaked havoc across Florida, where it whipped up tornadoes, cut power for more than 3.3 million energy customers, put 11 million people at risk of flooding and killed at least 12. The storm’s winds were particularly intense in Venice Beach in Sarasota County, where they reached a high of 107 mph. St. Petersburg recorded a staggering 18.31 inches of rainfall, meeting the threshold of a 1-in-1,000-year rainfall event. These "1-in-1000 year" events will soon be "1-in-every-couple-of-years" unless we take decisive action to combat climate change. How much more of a warning do we need?

Trump demands CBS be stripped of license over edited Harris interview
The disgraced ex-president went absolutely ballistic over CBS choosing to broadcast a 60 Minutes clip from Harris about Israel that was shorter and snappier than the version shown in the trailer and called for CBS to lose its license. "A FAKE NEWS SCAM, which is totally illegal. TAKE AWAY THE CBS LICENSE. Election Interference!" wrote Trump on social media. Uhh, it's called "editing," and yeah it turns out they film more than 60 minutes worth of footage and cut it down to make the best TV show. FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel denounced Trump's statements and said “While repeated attacks against broadcast stations by the former president may now be familiar, these threats against free speech are serious and should not be ignored. The First Amendment is a cornerstone of our democracy. The FCC does not and will not revoke licenses for broadcast stations simply because a political candidate disagrees with or dislikes content or coverage.” It is deeply disturbing that it only takes the most pedestrian of supposed advantages for Harris for Trump to issue these kinds of serious, Constituition-ripping threats to our institutions. We must not give him the chance to make them become a reality.

Trump insults Detroit in speech in Detroit
Donald Trump spoke at the Detroit Economic Club and gave what NBC News called an economic speech but anyone who actually watched would have called "incoherent ramblings of the most insane bullshit you'll ever hear in your life." Some of the highlights include Trump saying that"If I were named Obama, I would’ve had the Nobel Prize. He got the prize, he didn’t know what he got it for," that "grocery" was "a sort of simple word. It sort of means everything you eat. The stomach is speaking," and that in California, they "don't have electricity. In California, you have brownouts or blackouts every week. The place is stone cold broke, no electricity." But the real kicker was when he insulted the city of Detroit, while in Detroit, and speaking to a room full of Detroit businessmen, saying that it was a "third world" country and that “our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands.” Way to win the hearts and minds!

Obama tears into Trump and appeals to Black men in powerful speech
The beloved former president gave a striking speech in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, calling out Black men who might not be willing to vote for Kamala Harris because she's a woman. “You’re thinking about sitting out or supporting somebody who has a history of denigrating you, because you think that’s a sign of strength, because that’s what being a man is? Putting women down?” Obama said. “That’s not acceptable...You’re coming up with all kinds of reasons and excuses, I’ve got a problem with that. Because part of it makes me think – and I’m speaking to men directly – part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and you’re coming up with other alternatives and other reasons for that.”

Interim NYPD commissioner to step down in wake of corruption probe
That's right. Chief cop Edward Caban was forced to resign after being caught up in Mayor Eric Adams' federal corruption probe, and now his replacement, Tom Donlon, is ALSO stepping down after being caught up in the corruption probe. It's gotten so bad that the city is considering turning to the head of the Sanitation Department, Jessica Tisch, to take the job and clean up after all of these crooked cops. How far does this go?
UN inquiry accuses Israel of "crime of extermination" through deliberate destruction of Gaza’s health care system
A United Nations inquiry has accused Israel of carrying out a “concerted policy” of destroying the health care system in Gaza during its year-long conflict with Hamas in attacks it said amount to war crimes. Israel’s actions in the besieged Palestinian enclave “constitute the war crimes of willful killing and mistreatment and the crime against humanity of extermination,” the commission said in a statement Thursday. “Israeli security forces have deliberately killed, detained and tortured medical personnel and targeted medical vehicles” in Gaza, according to the report by the UN’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel. Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Israel “must immediately stop its unprecedented wanton destruction...children in particular have borne the brunt of these attacks, suffering both directly and indirectly from the collapse of the health system.
Senate Republicans to save millions of dollars on ads — thanks to the FEC
The inability of the FEC to do literally anything once again ends up empowering Republicans, who are skirting the rules and using a campaign-finance loophole that will allow them to save millions of dollars on TV advertising by running campaign ads for a candidate, framed as a fundraising plea, to get cheaper ad rates and avoid awkward content restrictions. Democrats pointed out that this obviously violated both ethical and legal boundaries, but for some inexplicable reason the FEC has three Democrats and three Republicans on its board, meaning that it's always a 3-3 tie and therefore the cheating is allowed to continue.
NBC set post-election MSNBC premiere of Errol Morris Doc "Separated" to avoid offending Trump
A brutal new documentary documenting the horrors of Trump's family separation policy has been delayed until AFTER the election by NBC over fears that it might offend Trump, according to Oliver Darcy, who up until last month was CNN's media critic for "Reliable Sources" until he went solo. If that's true, it is yet another astonishing move by the mainstream media to protect and shield Trump from the consequences of his appalling actions, putting profit over the good of our democracy just as they did in 2016 with the overblown coverage of Hillary Clinton's email server.
