URGENT ACTION
Emergency Situation in Garifuna Community of Nueva Armenia

Two nights ago, Garifuna leaders in the community of Nueva Armenia were shot at by the Honduras National Police. Currently, two leaders are in critical condition and armed officers have been setting up posts outside hospitals where the injured are receiving care.
This brutality comes after days of increased police threats, persecution, and harassment on the community, with the intent to displace them out of their homelands because of palm oil interests from the company Palmas de Atlántida. There has been no official response from the Honduras government, and there’s been minimal media coverage on this violence.
OFRANEH’s immediate ask to the solidarity network is to mobilize through solidarity statements and amplification of what Garifuna leaders are documenting in their social media. We’re currently working directly with OFRANEH on a public statement condemning the violence and a letter to the Security Minister, Gustavo Sanchez.
Sign a public statement?
Would your organization be interested in signing-on to the public statement and letter? We’re still drafting the letter with OFRANEH, and would be sending it to everyone as soon as we have it.

You can also check OFRANEH’s social media, as well as follow Organizer Rony Castillo’s updates. If you tweet, please tweet at and/or tag the Honduras Government (@GobiernoHN), the Honduras National Police (@PoliciaHonduras), President Xiomara (@XiomaraCastroZ), Security Minister (@hegusave), and the U.S. Embassy in Honduras (@embassyhn).
Please let us know if you have any contacts not in the network who could amplify the work and demands of OFRANEH. Similarly, let us know if you have any questions. We will keep you on the loop as OFRANEH asks us to mobilize. We thank you for the ways you’ve shown up in solidarity and hope you are doing well and staying safe.
In solidarity,
Jalileh
