Maryam, our advisor on Afghanistan, shares how we can extend our support to Afghan women even further.
Dear John,
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who quickly and generously responded to our email on the 'vice & virtue' order in Afghanistan. Your support shows a firm commitment to standing with Afghan women, ensuring they are not forgotten at such a challenging time.
Maryam Rahmani, Advisor on Afghanistan at Womankind Worldwide, details the current situation in a new blog post.
"The introduction of the new Taliban 'vice and virtue' law has a significant impact on the rights and freedoms of Afghan women. This law has effectively stripped Afghan women of their basic human rights and dignity.
In her blog post, Maryam recommends several actions the international community can take to further support Afghan women and girls. Her recommendations include:
Allocate and channel humanitarian aid directly to women and girls through trusted local and international NGOs that focus on gender-sensitive programming;
How we're taking action: Womankind is supporting partners in Afghanistan with core and flexible funds to ensure their very survival as they navigate such a challenging time. We have successfully funded projects in Afghanistan such as the Vocational Training and Literacy for Women in Kabul Province.
Support initiatives that highlight the compatibility of Islam with gender equality, countering the Taliban’s narrative and empowering Afghan women through their faith;
Provide support to independent Afghan media outletsthat continue to report on women’s issues, ensuring that the world remains informed about the situation on the ground.
The initial wave of support from Womankind supporters has been remarkable. But we must stay engaged on Afghan women’s rights and amplify their voices!
Womankind is in constant touch with partners in Afghanistan, supporting and advising them in whichever way possible. You can help sustain this work by donating here.
Thank you again for being part of our global community, as we stand alongside Afghan women advocating for their human rights.
Best wishes,
Martina Hoggart
Interim Director of Fundraising & Marketing Womankind Worldwide
P.S. Please share this email with friends and family who might be interested in supporting this cause. The more voices we have, the louder we become in our call for justice for Afghan women.
