Call to Action: Urge Congress to Support $100 Billion in Emergency Rental Assistance NOW

The “Emergency Rental Assistance & Rental Market Stabilization Act” will soon be introduced by Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Representative Denny Heck (D-WA) with over 120 original cosponsors. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) will introduce companion legislation in the Senate.

The bill provides $100 billion in emergency rental assistance to help keep the lowest-income renters stably housed during the coronavirus pandemic. To learn more about the legislation, see National Low Income Housing Coalition’s factsheet.

Ensure Renters Know If They Are Protected From Evictions

After urging from advocates, the Federal Housing Finance Administration announced this week that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have developed online multifamily property lookup tools to help renters find out if they are protected from evictions during the pandemic. The property lookup tools allow renters in multifamily properties to find out if it has a Enterprise-backed mortgage. Under the CARES Act, renters living in a property with an Enterprise-backed mortgage are covered by a temporary eviction moratorium. Landlords with these mortgages can enter forbearance if their tenants cannot pay rent due to COVID-19 loss of income.
