Hate crimes have no place in Oldham

Tomorrow sees the start of National Hate Crime Awareness Week (12 – 19 October) and Oldham Council and our partners will be raising awareness of the impact hate can have on people's lives – and also making sure they know how to report it.

Throughout the awareness week the council will be sharing videos, information, and support messages.

Hate crime is an act of violence or hostility that is directed at a person or group because of who they are or what they think they are.

It comes in many different forms such as physical attacks, a threat of attack and verbal abuse or insults, and anyone can be affected by such incidents.

If you have been affected by a hate crime, even if you’re unsure that you’ve been a victim, it is important to speak to someone.

In an emergency call 999 and in a non-emergency call 101, go to a nearby police station or report it online at [www.gmp.police.uk/hatecrime.]([link removed])

Extra support is also available through the Stop Hate UK Helpline on 0800 138 1625 - a free confidential 24-hour hate crime reporting service.

Every action has a consequence

The council, Greater Manchester Police, Oldham Sixth Form College and Oldham College are working in partnership to keep young people safe and to support you to enjoy your education.

Next week we’ll be sharing a series of short videos on our social media channels highlighting how if young people get involved in aggressive, criminal and/or violent behaviour it could change their lives. And not for the better.

They could lose their college place, job, or future career. It could even stop them doing the little things in life that they enjoy such as going abroad on holiday.

Check out the #WhatWouldTheySay videos from Monday and please share.

Warm clothes and duvets handed to more than 70 families for winter

A Winter Warm Appeal has been launched by the Our Community Wardrobe clothing bank and Oldham Family Hubs -  and the first stop was Spring Meadows Family Hub.

On Tuesday morning more than 70 families collected donations of pre-loved and new items including coats, hats, scarves and cuddly fleeces.

Mum Sally Cook got a snowsuit, blanket, babygrows and vests for her five-week-old son Parker Priestley and pyjamas for her older sons.

“It’s amazing. This is helping the community and people who are struggling,” she said.

Oldham Council installs special postbox at crematorium

A special post box has been installed at Hollinwood Crematorium to allow relatives to send letters to loved ones who are no longer alive.

The council has placed a memorial post box in the Book of Remembrance Room.

Councillor Chris Goodwin, whose portfolio covers the Crematorium and Cemeteries, said: "They can just pop in and post their special message. It gives people the chance to post a birthday card, Christmas card, or the last card or letter that they may not have had the chance to send.”

Plastic pots, tubs and trays can go in your brown bin from Monday

The type of plastic collected for recycling is about to change.

To mark National Recycle Week you will be able to recycle plastic pots, tubs and trays, as well as plastic bottles in your brown bin at home from Monday.

This means that the following materials can be put in:
•           Plastic pots (e.g. yoghurt, soup, cosmetics etc)
•           Plastic tubs (e.g. margarine, laundry powder, chocolates etc)
•           Plastic trays including black plastic trays (e.g. raw and cooked meat, fruit and veg punnets etc)
•           Plastic bottles (e.g. milk, pop, bleach, cleaning products, trigger sprays, shampoo)
•           Glass bottles and jars
•           Food tins and drinks cans
•           Aerosols
•           Foil

But no plastic film, carrier bags, crisp packets or pet food pouches, and all items must be clean and empty of any food or drink.

Recycle for Greater Manchester (R4GM) are upgrading their materials recovery facility where the mixed recycling is sorted and separated.

This will allow them to collect and sort a wider range of plastic packaging.

Stepping out to break the stigma

Well done to everyone who joined us last Saturday morning for our Walk of Hope event in Alexandra Park.

It was great to see so many local residents and members of Oldham Park Run coming together to talk about their general health and wellbeing with our partners, including Samaritans, Action Together and Tameside, Oldham & Glossop Mind.

The walk was organised as part of our support to this year’s Greater Manchester Month of Hope campaign which aims to break the stigma attached to suicide.

If you need to speak with someone today about how you are feeling, support is on hand. Call Samaritans’ 24/7 phone line on 116 123.

Get ready for a spooky scavenger hunt

From Saturday 26 October to Sunday 3 November, embrace the spooky season with Oldham town centre’s Halloween Trail.

Pick up your hunting guide from the Market Hall or Spindles (near Next), and search for Halloween-themed items lurking around town.

Complete the trail and drop your entry into the post boxes for a chance to win some spooktacular prizes.

And on Saturday 26 October, eerie performers will be roaming the streets to hopefully give you a fright.
