[VIRTUAL EVENT] An October 8th World: The Surge in Antisemitism and the Path Forward

On Tuesday, members of the ADL community took part in a webinar to remember a day that shook us all to the core, and to explore the days since then that brought an unprecedented rise in antisemitic incidents worldwide, the ongoing hostage crisis with over one hundred still held captive by Hamas and the alarming climate of antisemitism and anti-Zionism on campus.

Fighting Hate from Home Webinar

ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt, David Goldenberg, Susan Heller Pinto and Oren Segal discussed the over 10,000 incidents we have tracked in the U.S. and the similar surges in antisemitism that are afflicting Jewish communities around the world. Special guest Eitan Bernath talked about his experience as a Jewish voice with an audience in the millions and how he has coped with anger and even death threats as he speaks up to help people understand the reality behind the coverage of the crisis.

Our panel discussed the resiliency shown by the people of Israel, as well as by the Jewish communities and allies who are pushing back against hate and misinformation. We were reminded of ways that ADL is taking action — supporting students and pressing leadership to make campuses safer; working in DC and the states to push for stronger laws, educating law enforcement about antisemitism and making Holocaust education part of K-12 curricula; and filing lawsuits and other legal challenges to antisemitism and bias. We are using every lever we have, and everyone in this community can make a difference.

What’s News

A Year of Hate: Antisemitism on Telegram Post-10/7: To understand the online impact of the 10/7 attacks, the ADL Center on Extremism analyzed online violent antisemitism and anti-Israel content on Telegram, a large private messaging service and social media platform that attracts extremists because of its privacy protections and lack of restrictions on hate speech. ADL continuously monitors thousands of Telegram channels. In this new report, we provide evidence of a massive spike in violent antisemitic activity and show how antisemitic activity remains persistently high relative to pre-10/7 activity, suggesting a “new normal.” Read the Telegram report.

Harassment and Support for Hamas Mark Student Protests on 10/7 Anniversary: On the grim anniversary of Hamas’ terror massacre in southern Israel, anti-Israel demonstrations on U.S. campuses again featured extreme pro-terror messages that glorified the attack and sought to disrupt campus life. Some events were marked by vandalism, intimidation and harassment. Jewish students and community members were repeatedly confronted with rhetoric that celebrated that violence on the ground and online. Read the ADL report on these protests.

[WEBINAR 10/15] The Cost of Israel Divestment for University Endowments: ADL affiliate JLens recently released a first-of-its-kind report that quantifies the financial implications of BDS-aligned investment strategies for universities. It found that the 100 largest U.S. university endowments could collectively forgo $33.2 billion in returns over the next decade. On Oct. 15 at 12:30 - 1:30 pm ET / 9:30 - 10:30 am PT, please join JLens and Professor Max M. Schanzenbach, the Seigle Family Professor of Law at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law to discuss the financial impact of divestment from Israel and the legal risks to universities. REGISTER NOW.
