You have probably seen by now that, this week, the United States Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a ruling from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals that the federal government cannot require hospitals to provide abortion care in emergency rooms in Texas when women in the state need it.

This ruling not only undermines our access to reproductive health care, it undermines the ability of the federal government to protect all of our rights. For us in Texas, it means emergency rooms can continue to turn away pregnant women experiencing life-threatening medical complications, denying them the care they so desperately need. This ruling ensures the chaos and cruelty we have been experiencing in Texas will continue, offering no reassurances to doctors who could face penalties—including jail time—for performing abortions for patients in dire circumstances. More women will die as a result.
This is another reminder that we cannot count on the courts—not the Texas Supreme Court or the U.S. Supreme Court—to protect us. We must elect leaders at every level of government who care about the health of women in Texas and across the country and who will do everything they can to protect us and our rights.
And we have less than a month left to do all we can to ensure real leaders win their races, especially Vice President Kamala Harris—who will appoint future justices to the Supreme Court and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals that issued this terrible ruling in the first place—and Colin Allred, who as our Senator will confirm them. #TeamLizzie is on the job. We understand the assignment. And we are doing all we can for the next 25 days to deliver.
