** Action Alert: Call On the UC Board of Regents to End the Militarization of University Campuses
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear John,
On September 19, the University of California (UC) Board of Regents approved the use of military equipment for campus police departments across the UC system. This decision contradicts the UC's mission and values, which aims to create an environment of trust and safety for all students. Deploying military-grade equipment does not enhance safety; instead, it fosters an atmosphere of fear and alienation among students and community members.
The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) urges all community members to contact the University of California Board of Regents to raise concerns about decision-making frameworks that contradict university standards and values.
Take Action: Contact the UC Board of Regents ([link removed])
The board's current approach exacerbates tension and widens the gap between our community and administration. We urge the board to reconsider this decision by adopting a community-centered approach that fosters a secure and supportive educational environment.
To pressure the Board of Regents, MPAC led a coalition of 35 organizations in a letter ([link removed]) urging them to reverse their decision. Our diverse coalition transcended political ideologies, faiths, and ethnic backgrounds. Signatories included the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., Doctors Against Genocide, and Bend the Arc: Jewish Action.
Our Work With The Department of Education
While we continue to urge the University of California (UC) Board of Regents to reverse their misguided decision, we have also raised the issue to the Secretary of Education and the Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education.
We called on them to condition federal funding and collaboration with the UC system on the reversal of this policy. By prohibiting the use of federal funds for military-style equipment, the Department of Education can take a clear stand against the militarization of our campuses. Furthermore, suspending collaboration and funding until this decision is overturned will emphasize the Department's commitment to prioritizing the well-being of students over the pursuit of a false sense of security.
Thank you for your commitment to ensuring campus safety prioritizes community engagement over militarization.
In Service,
Haris Tarin
Vice President, Policy and Programming
