Hi friend,

Today is World Mental Health Day – an international event meant to highlight mental health around the world and encourage efforts to support those experiencing mental health issues.

As a mom of two young girls, I deeply understand the importance of prioritizing mental health, especially for our children. Families, communities, and leaders can and must do more to support mental wellness. That’s why I was so proud to have secured the passage of the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Reauthorization Act in 2022 – bipartisan legislation to renew critical youth mental health and suicide prevention programs.

I believe in investing in programs proven to help young people, save lives, and break down the stigma surrounding mental health. And I’m grateful to have worked across the aisle to make meaningful progress in this area.

Schools are also crucial in this mission. That’s why last year, I introduced the Mentoring to Succeed Act, a bill designed to provide research-backed support to students facing challenges like poverty, inadequate schooling, trauma, and more. I’m proud to report that a provision in the government funding package that was signed into law by President Biden earlier this year was based on this important legislation. Specifically, it provides up to $6.1 million to support grants for evidence-based, school-based mentoring programs.

Additionally, in 2022, I introduced the Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Act, which promotes positive mental health programs in high schools. I believe it’s critical that we normalize conversations around mental health, free of stigma and judgment, so young people feel comfortable seeking help when they need it. Far too many families in our district and across the country have been affected by a lack of accessible mental health resources, and I will continue to fight for better support systems and services.

Friend, addressing mental health needs requires a comprehensive, compassionate approach. Every person deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy, fulfilling life with access to the help and support they need when challenges arise. I remain committed to advancing mental health care and resources in Congress – and together, we can continue making a difference. [[link removed]]
