Team,
We are living through an unprecedented crisis, and so many Americans need a helping hand right now -- and that includes those living with disabilities.
Americans with disabilities often have inadequate access to healthcare as well as public transit and suffer from higher unemployment rates. These disparities have only worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
That's something that should concern all Americans, but I also understand these challenges firsthand.
Sixteen years ago while I was serving as a pilot in Iraq, my helicopter was shot down and I lost both my legs. I spent a year in Walter Reed hospital undergoing intensive physical therapy.
My disability hasn't taken away my strength. In fact, I've been able to achieve so much more than I imagined, including giving birth to two beautiful daughters and serving in the U.S. Senate. But there were struggles along the way.
I needed the help of my family and my military community and doctors -- and the civil rights protections included in the Americans with Disabilities Act that Congress passed three decades ago -- in order to make it to where I am today.
Right now, the 61 million Americans living with disabilities need Congress to act again to weather this pandemic.
That's why I joined forces with my Democratic colleagues and wrote a letter to congressional leadership urging them to allocate $50 billion to support disabled Americans in the upcoming stimulus package.
I'm asking you to join us today by signing on to our letter as a citizen signer.
It's time we increase funding to programs that will support Americans with disabilities during the COVID-19 crisis. Sincerely, Tammy Duckworth, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Sherrod Brown, Bob Casey, and Maggie Hassan. Add your name here: [link removed]
Thank you for your support. It means the world to me.
Stay safe,
Tammy Duckworth
