John,
When the Dobbs ruling came down, over a dozen states had trigger laws that came into effect to place restrictions on abortion care. Today, 13 states have banned abortion entirely, while 27 states have partial bans based on gestational duration. This has made interstate travel for abortion care much more common, as abortion providers in blue states offer a lifeline to out-of-state patients.
For our October special issue, Emma Janssen wrote about interstate aggression in the aftermath of the Dobbs ruling. Anti-abortion activists are embracing hardline tactics to prevent abortion access across state borders, including litigation, "sanctuary city" laws and even political violence. In Illinois, a xxxxxx for reproductive health care access in the Midwest surrounded on all sides by states with abortion bans, these tensions have come to a head. Pro-choice organizers have built strong interstate networks capable of withstanding threats, but as the right continues to organize these pathways are not sustainable. Without a nationwide solution, legal battles will proliferate and anti-choice aggression will only continue to grow.

This month, we're releasing a special issue on how state policy has diverged so sharply in red and blue states. Depending on where you live, your life expectancy, quality of life and economic well-being could vary wildly. And states aren't just content to legislate policy that stops at state borders. Far-right activists championing extremist policies in red states want to impose their vision on the entire country, through the courts, corporate collusion and even political violence. This dynamic is best understood as a cold civil war, and it impacts the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans.
