With Congress gridlocked, state legislatures have become the real power centers for shaping policy. It was state lawmakers who packed courts with conservative judges, laying the groundwork for Roe v. Wade’s reversal. And now, those same states — like Florida, Texas, and Arizona — are using their power to: ban the use of public funds to fight climate change, erase mentions of climate change from state law, and expand fossil fuel projects.
