Kamala Harris just announced a plan to expand Medicare to include home-based long-term care. And she’s adding hearing and vision benefits as well.

I can't overstate how huge this announcement is. Currently, the only long-term care system that we have in this country falls on Medicaid, which is means-tested. Long-term care costs around $100,000 per year, so almost no one can afford it.

Under the current system, a person has to spend down any assets they have in order to qualify for coverage, sometimes even divorcing their loving spouses in order to qualify to get their long-term care covered. And even then, after breaking up families and depleting their nest eggs, they wind up in a dehumanizing corporate nursing home that exists to exploit patients for profit, because that’s still all they can afford.

This is a system that is fundamentally broken in this country.

The plan Kamala Harris just announced is a big step toward fulfilling Medicare’s promise of a simple, universal benefit. She’s following in the grand tradition of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Frances Perkins.

Under the Harris plan, seniors and people with disabilities would have the freedom to stay in their own homes. Everyone on Medicare would qualify.

This policy is massive and it also just highlights the choice in November. Kamala Harris stands with seniors and people with disabilities. Donald Trump stands with billionaires.
