John

We have another breaking news week in the continued SCOTUS crisis of ethics and legitimacy, this time fueled by the actions of the Trump administration. Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that the Trump White House constrained the FBI from investigating sexual assault claims against now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Instead, all tips were forwarded to the White House without investigation.
The findings in Senator Whitehouse’s report are staggering, appalling, and unsurprisingly prove what we have known all along: then-President Trump and his administration had no interest in justice or accountability and were uninterested in determining whether Brett Kavanaugh had committed sexual assault. They cared more about confirming an ideologically aligned and extremist justice. Enough is enough.

Conservatives have stacked SCOTUS with extremist justices intent on serving him without question instead of upholding a fair and impartial judiciary that works for all people. Survivors deserve more. All of us committed to truth, accountability, and equal justice under the law deserve more. We demand that Congress curb justices unethical behavior by passing a binding code of conduct and term limits.

Subject: TAKE ACTION: Justice Thomas needs to be held accountable.
Fighting for gender justice in the courts, in public policy, and in our society.
Justice for her. Justice for all.

Dear John,

This week, ProPublica exposed Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for privately praising a religious-rights group fighting against Supreme Court reforms—reforms that would hold her husband accountable for his unethical conduct. Justices Thomas and Alito have for years received lavish gifts from Republican megadonors with business before the Court. The transgressions have gone beyond conflict of interest and appear to be outright corruption. We can’t have the highest court in the land prioritizing the will of the wealthy few over the American people.
The corruption at the courts is eroding public trust in the judiciary and threatening our democracy. Without any real accountability, these sitting justices truly believe they are untouchable—that must change.

In addition to the constant SCOTUS ethics scandals, justices are refusing to recuse themselves from cases where there could be bias. These justices and their wealthy, extremist friends have been pushing back on the people’s calls for SCOTUS reforms. They claim that holding justices accountable will “destroy the independence of the judiciary and our democracy,” when the real issue is the justices’ relationships with politically motivated billionaires with interest in cases coming before the Court. SCOTUS needs a binding code of conduct and term limits—the highest court must be held accountable.

The Supreme Court belongs to the people NOT the few rich and powerful. We call on Congress to pass long overdue reforms to put an end to the ethics crisis in the judiciary. [[link removed]]
