We’ve got the answer. We've created a directory to away from fossil fuel-supporting insurers and find one that does not invest in fossil fuels.

Dear Green American,

Last year after 17 years in southwest Columbus, Ohio, my husband and I decided to move to a neighborhood with easier access to work and more amenities.

With that move came the need to switch home insurance. At the time, our insurance was with Liberty Mutual – which I learned was one of the worst for supporting fossil fuels.

Besides investing $1.8 billion in oil, gas, and coal companies, Liberty Mutual insures:

Trans Mountain Pipeline, which ships 590,000 barrels of tar sands oil per day to British Columbia

Freeport, Rio Grande, and several other LNG export terminals on the Gulf Coast

Hilcorp, EOG, Antero, and other companies fracking on Ohio public lands.

I knew we had to get different insurance, but didn't know where to start. Eventually we found Grange Insurance, a regional mutual headquartered in our community, which is not using its investments to further the climate crisis – and we are saving over $750 per year for better home and auto insurance!

Finding new insurance was difficult because there was no guide or directory to help. If you want to switch to a better bank that does not finance fossil fuels, there are several directories, including Green America’s Get a Better Bank map.

But there was no such directory for insurance – until now.

TAKE ACTION

Over the past year, Green America worked with Rivers and Mountains GreenFaith to create the Climate Smart Insurance Directory of companies that:

Offer home, renters, and auto insurance

Do not insure fossil fuel projects (per publicly available information)

Have no indication of direct investments in the fossil fuel industry (Grade A) or have investments under $200 million (Grade B)

Have a rating of A- or above for financial stability in AM Best

Most states have at least four climate-smart insurers listed. Many of the companies are regional mutuals that do not spend large amounts of money on advertising but have been serving their communities for decades.

Home insurance is increasingly in crisis as the same large insurers that insure fossil fuel projects and invest in fossil fuel companies raise rates and limit coverage in climate-vulnerable areas.

But there are alternatives. Check out Green America’s new Climate Smart Insurance Directory today!

Yours for a green economy,

..................
