Friend,
Justices on the Supreme Court are supposed to protect our rights. But ethical lapses from some on the bench reinforce doubts about their impartiality and whether they’re simply carrying out the political agenda of the conservative megadonors that surround them.
Join us in demanding ethics reform for the Supreme Court by signing and sending this petition that urges Congress to act!>>
Here’s just some of what has been uncovered in the last few years alone:
- Thomas's Undisclosed Trips: ProPublica revealed Justice Clarence Thomas received luxury travel from GOP megadonor Harlan Crow, failing to disclose it as required. The Senate Judiciary Committee found additional undisclosed trips between 2017-2021.
- Thomas and Crow's Other Secret Transactions: Besides trips, Crow bought Thomas’s mother’s home in 2014 and made substantial improvements to it while she was still living there. He also paid for the private school tuition for the relative Thomas was raising “as a son.”
- Justice Samuel Alito's Controversial Flag Display: Alito displayed an inverted flag (a symbol used by insurrectionists) days after the January 6 attack on Congress and an "Appeal to Heaven" flag (also used by insurrectionists and Christian nationalists) in 2023.
- Ginni Thomas's Activism: Thomas faced criticism for not recusing from cases linked to the 2020 election, which his wife actively tried to overturn.
- Thomas's Unpaid RV Loan: A Senate investigation highlighted that Thomas was not asked to repay a significant “loan” from a wealthy businessman used for a luxury RV purchase.
- Thomas at Koch Network Events: Thomas attended Koch network donor summits without disclosing his participation or travel.
- Alito's Undisclosed Fishing Trip: Alito took an undisclosed luxury vacation hosted by billionaire Paul Singer, who paid for his travel on a private jet and who has had interests before the Court.
- Alito and Hobby Lobby Leak: A conservative activist allegedly knew the 2014 Burwell v. Hobby Lobby decision outcome in advance after dining with Alito.
Eight significant ethical breaches. That’s eight too many.
President Biden has called for common sense court reform to get SCOTUS back in check. He’s proposing implementing 18-year term limits for justices and a binding code of conduct that would prevent any of the justices from deciding cases where they have a conflict of interest and would also require them to disclose gifts.
Join us in calling on Congress to support President Biden’s Supreme Court reforms!>>
By raising our voices and demanding that Congress take action, we can make the Supreme Court a pillar of justice and fairness, not a tool the wealthy and well-connected can manipulate for their own gain.
