The bond between mother and child is unique, for both humans and animals. But for mothers and their young on factory farms, this bond is severed quickly, or isn’t formed at all. 

Chickens raised for meat never know their mothers. They are taken as eggs and, after hatching, are kept in sheds with thousands of other baby chicks, where they will never experience a mother’s affection. Calves, crying, are ripped from their mothers within just hours of birth. Mother pigs are confined in metal cages, unable to move, where their only interaction with their young is to feed them through the bars.
