“Helping Hand” Artwork Shines a Light on Hiring People with Disabilities

Igene Abraham Artwork

Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) is celebrated in Texas each year with job fairs, public awareness events, and a statewide HireAbility campaign to promote employment opportunities for Texans with disabilities. The Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD) partners with the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) as part of the public awareness campaign to distribute free DEAM posters to thousands of Texas employers and businesses to educate them on the talents and abilities of workers with disabilities to educate them on the talents and abilities of workers with disabilities, while sharing valuable employer resources through the HireAbility [ [link removed] ] website.

The posters are intended to spark conversations on the employment of people with disabilities in businesses and organizations across our great state. The posters feature original artwork from an outstanding Texas artist, a picture of the artist, a personal statement about the artwork, and the national DEAM theme. The 2024 theme is “Access to Good Jobs for All [ [link removed] ]”.

This year's poster artist goes by the name, “kidhamm.” He is an artist with a vision impairment, living with ocular albinism and nystagmus. These conditions have shaped his perspective and, in many ways, have fueled his passion for art.

His art piece is titled "Helping Hand". It portrays a girl in a wheelchair receiving instructions from her employer. The garden setting is not arbitrary. It serves as a visual testament that inclusivity should span all areas of employment driven by diverse interests and aspirations. The girl in the wheelchair is not just a passive recipient of assistance; she is an active participant in her own professional journey. The employer's instruction symbolizes guidance and support, crucial elements in creating a workplace where everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can thrive.
