Over three years ago, then-Mesa County clerk Tina Peters tampered with voting machines in an attempt to prove Trump’s Big Lie.
Since then, my office and the Mesa County district attorney have worked together to make clear that those who undermine the integrity of our elections and election equipment will be held accountable.
Last week, the Mesa County District Court did just that.
Peters received a 9-year sentence and you can click here to watch my CNN interview about the sentencing.
This sentencing sends a powerful message not only in Colorado, but across the nation. Tina Peters is not the only person attempting to undermine our elections and perpetuate the Big Lie that former President Donald Trump did not lose the 2020 election.
Those who engage in such conduct in our upcoming election should view this as a cautionary tale—these actions are illegal and there are consequences for taking them.
In America, we protect the rule of law and the integrity of our elections as the foundations of our democratic republic.
We can disagree with one another on policy issues–and even on the outcome of a trial–but we must respect the integrity of our legal and election systems.
Tina Peters failed to do so and, as the judge stated, showed no remorse for her crimes. Worse yet, some of her supporters have tried to threaten or intimidate the public officials who prosecuted the case, the court staff, and the judge.
We live in a challenging time. As Attorney General, I am committed to defending our democratic republic and holding accountable those who seek to undermine it.
