John,

A Catholic hospital is being sued by the state because they refused to provide emergency abortion care to a woman experiencing a miscarriage.

She was 15 weeks pregnant with twins. One had already died in utero. The other had “a detectable heartbeat” according to hospital staff.

They gave her a choice:

Spend tens of thousands of dollars (not covered by insurance) on a medivac helicopter ride to another hospital or...

Take a bucket and some towels “in case anything happened” on the 80 mile drive to the nearest hospital willing to treat her.

This didn't happen in a state with an abortion ban like Idaho. This happened in California – where abortion rights are fiercely protected under state law.

A news clip from CBS News with the headline, California sues Catholic hospital for denying emergency abortion to woman having a miscarriage.”

The reality is that the attacks on reproductive healthcare aren't limited to states with bans. It's happening everywhere because Republicans like Mike Simpson have empowered EVERYONE who wants to control women’s bodies, women’s choices, and women’s lives.

Women are dying in this country due to these restrictions, as we saw in Georgia with Amber Thurman, and a 6-year-old lost his mother because she was denied care.

Georgia’s extreme abortion ban is being challenged in the courts, with one judge ruling that forcing a woman to remain pregnant amounts to slave labor. In Texas, the Biden DOJ sued to compel the state to allow life-saving emergency abortions at the doctor’s discretion. SCOTUS just shot the case down.

We're seeing a huge increase in maternal mortality rates across the country. In Texas alone maternal mortality shot up 56% after the fall of Roe.

Here in Idaho, our state shut down maternal morbidity review boards altogether – only to be forced to reinstate them over a year later.

At the same time, access to prenatal care is decreasing. More women are choosing permanent sterilization out of fear of being denied critical care during pregnancy complications.

All of these are the reasons we MUST address reproductive rights at the federal level. We can't leave it up to a patchwork of state laws, the opinions of congressmen, or the whims of religious hospitals.

My opponent in Idaho’s 2nd District, Mike Simpson, told the Idaho Capital Sun that the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade was "correctly decided." He supports the Life at Conception Act, which would ban abortion nationwide without exceptions. Mike Simpson is a radical anti-abortion extremist who will gladly let women die to toe the Republican party line. That is a man entirely too dangerous to remain in office.

As far as I’m concerned, the blood of every woman who has died after being denied care is on his hands – and the hands of every politician who has worked to strip away these fundamental rights.

I'm running for Congress to fight for federal protections for reproductive healthcare, because the right to control your own body is NON-NEGOTIABLE. As your next congressman, I will fight to ensure no woman is ever denied medical care because of someone else’s extremist ideology.

We’re in the home stretch of this election, but we have a LOT of work to do still. Will you chip in $25, $50, $75, $100, or whatever you can afford today to help us win this fight? Abortion is on the ballot, and we can't rest until reproductive rights are secured.

Every contribution brings us one step closer to flipping this seat and protecting reproductive rights for all Americans.

David Roth is a single, gay dad running for Idaho’s Second Congressional District. We’re going up against a GOP incumbent who has been in this seat for 25 years. It’s time for change in Idaho, and our grassroots campaign is building on the momentum that began in David’s race for U.S. Senate last cycle. The GOP is not planning to defend this seat, so we plan to take it from them and help Democrats retake the House majority next year. We’d love your support to build a solid campaign to bring progress to Idaho and the country.
