MPAC urges all people of conscience to contact Gov. Newsom regarding the troubling modifications to the codes of conduct at CA's public universities.
Action Alert: Call On Governor Newsom to Protect Our Students
Dear John,
On September 28, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed bill SB 1287, which, under the guise of improving campus safety, changed the codes of conduct to eliminate hostile environments. Instead, this law undermines the principles of free speech and open dialogue that form the backbone of our educational institutions. Prior to that, the University of California Board of Regents authorized the purchase and deployment of military-style equipment across the University of California (UC) campuses. The approval of military-grade equipment for campus police, coupled with restrictions on peaceful protests, creates an atmosphere of intimidation, particularly for marginalized communities, including those advocating for Palestinian rights.
The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) urges all people of conscience to contact Governor Newsom to express their concerns regarding these troubling modifications to the codes of conduct at California's public universities.
As Americans, we have a responsibility to stand with students to express their constitutional rights without fear and intimidation. We have also asked Governor Newsom to meet with community and student leaders to thoroughly reassess these policies. It is vital that we cultivate an environment where diverse voices can be heard and respected, free from fear of repression or militarization.
Thank you for your commitment to ensuring campus safety prioritizes community engagement over militarization.
